Nominations for National Train Day Golden STAR Award

On May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah, the “golden spike” was driven into the final tie that joined 1,776 miles of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railways, ceremonially creating the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. To commemorate that auspicious occasion, the second Saturday in May has been designated as “National Train Day.” The third annual NTD will be held May 8, 2010.

As part of the celebration, representatives from Amtrak, the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority, and Caltrans created California’s Golden STAR award to honor passenger rail advocates from California and help build awareness about National Train Day throughout the state. Former honorees include Doras Briggs (2008) and Art Lloyd (2009). The award will be presented at one of the National Train Day events in California on May 8.
